A man who went on trial for allegedly killing his twin brother was released from jail Monday after authorities decided to drop charges against him.

Wael Ali, 24, went on trial for murdering his identical twin Wasel, who was killed in 2007. A judge in late March declared a mistrial after a jury failed to reach a verdict after deliberating for 20 hours.

A lack of direct and DNA evidence in the case proved to be its undoing. Officials said that DNA evidence was also ruled out since Wael and Wasel were identical twins.

Prosecutors alleged that Wael strangled his brother to death. He was arrested in September of 2011 in Georgia nearly four years after his brother was found dead.

Police said that leading up to the murder, Wael may have been upset that Wasel implicated him in a series of thefts from a store in Columbia. Wasel has been previously fired from a job at the store.

Authorities stated that they would not re-try Ali.
