Wegmans is top grocery store in America, Consumer Reports says
If you listen to any regular Wegmans customer, you'll quickly understand why the grocery chain tops the Consumer Reports list of top food stores for a third straight year.
The trade publication surveyed more than 24,000 people and found that Wegmans, which has stores in six East Coast states, was tops among customers nationwide followed closely behind by Trader Joe's and Publix, the Florida-based chain that has stores in five states.
The results locally, though, were no surprise to customers at the newly-opened Wegmans in Prince George's County.
"Prices are cheap and the quality is good," Wegmans customer Tony Genovese said. "The best thing is the brand - the Wegmans brand is very good."
Another Wegman's fan, Carolyn Oates, says it's the people that keep her coming back.
"What makes you keep coming back to a store is the people that are in the store that make you feel comfortable," Oates said.
On the other end of the scale, which is based on customer service, price labeling and the freshness of produce and baked goods, are stores such as Shaw's, Walmart and Pathmark.
Costco and Harris Teeter, which have locations in the Washington metro area, also made the top 10.
Here's a look at the top 10 on the Consumer Reports list, including the bottom five and all the other chains that have locations in the D.C. area. Stores in bold have locations in the D.C. area.
