Bill Stewart dies: Former West Virginia football coach dies at 59

Bill Stewart, the former West Virginia Mountaineers coach who led the team from 2008-2010, died Monday, College Football Talk and CBS Sports report.

He was 59 years old.

According to West Virginia MetroNews, Stewart was playing golf in central West Virginia when he had a "serious heart attack." West Virginia officials confirmed Stewart's death a short time later.

West Virginia's athletic department did not immediately have a statement.

Stewart served as an assistant at West Virginia for eight full seasons before taking over as head coach before the 2008 Fiesta Bowl. His underdog Mountaineers beat Oklahoma in that game.

He later led West Virginia to a share of the Big East championship.

Before his time at West Virginia made many other stops during his coaching career, which spans back to 1977. One of his stints was as an assistant at Navy in 1984.

Stewart is survived by his wife, Karen, and son, Blaine.
