D.C. fetal pain bill debated in Congress
It's been three years since Christy Zink made the difficult decision to terminate her pregnancy at 21 weeks.
She says it was the worse thing that she have ever had to do. It was the worst thing that her husband has ever had to do too, she said.
Her unborn son was missing a critical portion of his brain. With no cure or solution, the prognosis was bleak.
Under a new measure being proposed in the House, women like Zink could not choose to end their pregnancy after 20 weeks in Washington D.C. The bill is based on the disputed claim that fetuses can feel pain at a gestational age of 20 weeks or older.
Bill supporters say these late term abortions should be banned.
“At that point in time the unborn child is capable of experiencing pain during an abortion and we feel that these children should be entitled to the right to life that no longer should abortion be legal until the moment of birth,” says Susan Muskett of the National Right to Life Committee.
But Zink believes women should have the right to terminate pregnancies.
“I think it’s absolutely a right and I think it’s up to every woman to make her own choice,” Zimk says. “Every pregnancy is different. And every pregnancy has its own set of circumstances but to have the full range of choice that's essential.”
Six states currently have similar laws on the books.
