D.C. proposes more money for illegal immigrant care
WASHINGTON (AP) - The discussion over whether District of Columbia benefits for illegal immigrants are too generous could heat up.
That's because a D.C. Council committee agreed Thursday to set aside $20.5 million to continue offering illegal immigrants free health insurance. The move comes as other city government services are being reduced.
The Washington Post reports that the full council is expected to accept the agreement when it votes on the budget later this month. D.C. Council member David A. Catania says the money represented savings from eliminating some vacant positions, recalculating Medicaid enrollment and transferring some funds between Health Department units.
The newspaper says the move reverses a proposal by Mayor Vincent C. Gray that could have restricted illegal immigrants from receiving emergency care.
