Bieber didn’t take his star girlfriend Selena Gomez, but rather, surprised Virginia high schooler Cady Eimer by inviting her to be his date.

Eimer, 18, of Poquoson, Virginia, had been asking the pop star to be her date to her senior prom through her website. Bieber said he could not make it to the prom because he was attending and performing at the Billboard Music Awards.

"I couldn't make it [to prom] so I said I need you to fly to the Billboard Awards and you can be my date," he told PEOPLE.

"She's a big fan and I thought it would be fun," he said.
