Just more than a month to the day that three horses were stabbed at an equestrian center at a Fairfax County park, a community is once again stunned and heartbroken after a similar attack this past weekend.

Fairfax County Police officials say more barnyard animals - a calf, young goats and a chicken were cut between 5 p.m. May 26 and 7 a.m. May 27 at the Kidwell Barn at Frying Pan Park in Herndon. Officers don't know what the suspect used to cut the animals.

The injuries were discovered Sunday morning by farm staff who were feeding the animals. Police say the calf and one goat are young and hand-fed, so they have no fear of humans.

"What has happened here is definitely brutal," neighbor Shamim Akhtar said. "I hope they catch him and I hope he gets help but I certainly hope this doesn't happen again."

The animals' injuries are not life-threatening. Police do not know if this most recent attack is connected to the April 26 stabbing of three horses on a property next to Frying Pan Park. Now, police are concerned that the further attacks on animals could be a red flag.

"Is this someone starting out, working their way up to other things?" Judy Lukens-Torian, a retired police officer, said. "If you could hurt animals...then people?"

Those who use the park and visit the animals just want this to be resolved and a suspect caught.

"For the safety of not just the animals, but the families as well that come and visit, is something that needs to be done urgently," park visitor Michael Spencer said.

The horses, who survived the attack, are part of the Spirit Open Equestrian Program that provides therapeutic rides for emotionally and physically disabled children. Since the April stabbing, the park has installed security cameras.

Police ask that anyone with information call Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).
