Police say seven drivers and two passengers died in traffic crashes. That's down from last year, when 12 people were killed over the four days. In at least eight of the crashes, the driver or passenger was not wearing a seatbelt.

The counting period began Friday morning and continued through midnight Monday.

Virginia State Police Superintendent Colonel W. Steven Flaherty says the number of those killed while not wearing seat belts is especially troubling since state police are in the middle of a Click-It-or-Ticket enforcement initiative.

That drive to increase seat belt usage continues through Sunday.

Over the weekend, police cited nearly 11,800 speeders and more than 3,050 reckless drivers and arrested 138 impaired drivers.
