North Capitol Street buglary and shooting leaves two injured
Two people were shot in Northwest D.C. Wednesday afternoon in what police say was a home burglary attempt, and three suspects in the case are still on the loose.
Police say that three male suspects, including one who was reportedly between the ages of 13 and 15, entered a house in the 2400 block of North Capitol Street at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
According to authorities, the suspects, all wearing white t-shirts, burglarized the home, shot a woman in the foot and a man in the leg, then fled. Both victims were taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
"It's definitely a surprise," neighborhood resident Henry Howze said. "I would not expect anything like this here. It's a good community."
Neighbors tell ABC 7 News that the male victim goes by the name "CK," but none of the people around the area know him very well. Other residents echoed Howze's surprise about the location and timing of the shooting.
The neighborhood, which is just a few blocks east of Howard University, is the home of several students.
"Crime could happen anywhere, but it does seem like a fairly safe neighborhood," Howard student Yvette Minix said.
Police say they're still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting and whether the victims and suspects knew each other or not. There was no word on what was taken from the house either.
