Only on 7: Victim, 74, describes armed home invasion in Dale City
An elderly man is shaken up after three armed men rushed into his home and robbed him in Dale City.
Tonight, in an interview you'll see Only on ABC7 with Gail Pennybacker, the victim explains what happened.
Inside his Dale City home, near midnight, the man was watching TV.
Suddenly, he was confronted by three masked men, one with a shotgun.
"Told me to get off the couch and lie down and one of them was holding the shotgun to my head," he says.
Because he's a survivor of a violent crime, the 74-year-old man's identity will not be revealed.
He says the men seemed to know exactly what they were looking for.
"Said, we want your money, you know why we're here," he says. "We want your money."
The man was not physically hurt.
As soon as the masked men left with an undisclosed amount of cash, he locked the door and called 911.
Despite scores of officers arriving within a couple of minutes and blocking surrounding streets, Prince William County Police didn't find the robbers.
But they have a theory that this wasn't a random home invasion.
"We believe the victim was targeted in a way, possible set up in the robbery," says Officer Jonathon Perok.
Neighbors in the area say they look out for each other. They credit their vigilance with crime being rare.
"It's awful," says Patricia Jenifer, a neighbor. "You should be able to be home, comfortable and not have to be on alert 24 hours a day."
The man says he doesn't know why he was the focus of this crime.
"I hope they catch them before they do it to somebody else."
