Luka Rocco Magnotta arrested in Canada body parts mailing
(AP/ABC7) - A man described as a "low-budget porn actor" has been arrested in Germany in connection with the murder and dismemberment of a person, then sending body parts to to political parties across Canada, CP24 reports..
The Canadian Press reports that Luka Rocco Magnotta was being sought in Montreal in connection to a suspected homicide. Police say that Magnotta is suspected of sending body parts - including a foot and a hand - to Ottawa, the nation's capital.
CP24 reports that Magnotta had fled to Europe, according to authorities, and was spotted in both Paris and Berlin. He was arrested outside an Internet cafe in Germany on Monday.
Police in Canada had been searching for a suspect after a severed human foot was mailed to the headquarters of Prime Minister Stephen Harper's political party and a second body part was found in a separate package elsewhere.
The foot arrived at the Conservative Party headquarters Tuesday in a blood-soaked box. Police say it was addressed to the party and not to a specific person.
A second body part, reported to be a hand, was found at a postal facility in Ottawa late Tuesday. Police didn't release any details.
Police say that a torso was also found inside a suitcase behind the Montreal apartment building where Magnotta had been living.
In Ottawa, political staffers were keeping a nervous eye on the mail.
"It's very upsetting," Opposition New Democrat member Yvon Godin said.
"It could be just one crazy person that did it, but at the same time we have lots of people unhappy in our country, the way the country is going."
Opposition Liberal member Justin Trudeau on Wednesday called the packages horrific.
Ottawa police said they were consulting with counterparts in Montreal after police there discovered the severed torso in a suitcase Tuesday. Daniel Fortier of the Montreal Police said the torso belonged to a male.
