Gray Alan Combs shot, killed in Springfield

A sword-wielding man who was wanted on a litany of charges, including producing and intending to distribute child pornography, was shot and killed by police in Springfield on Saturday night.
Fairfax County Police say officers went to the Springfield area apartment around 11:08 p.m. after hearing that the suspect, 22-year-old Gray Alan Combs, Jr., was hiding in a bedroom.
Police say the man was wanted on several outstanding warrants, including three felony counts of producing child pornography, three felony counts of possessing or reproducing child pornography with the intent to distribute, as well as a misdemeanor warrant for consensual sexual intercourse with a minor.
Those weren't the only things on Combs' rap sheet, either. His extended criminal record includes charges in Fairfax County for a series of GPS thefts. He didn't have a permanent Northern Virginia address, but police say he spent the last few years in the Springfield area, bouncing from residence to residence.
On May 18, officers issued two additional warrants after Combs gave them a fake name and eluded police on foot. Those warrants were for resisting arrest and identity theft.
As officers searched the Backlick Road apartment, they were threatened by the suspect, who was armed with a sword. He was told to put the weapon down, but did not listen. Police say they shot the man with non-lethal bean bag rounds and later used lethal rounds. Combs later died at an area hospital.
His friends, most of whom declined to be identified, called Combs a nice guy, but admit they didn't know about the felony charges against him.
One officer has been placed on administrative leave, which is routine in these situations.
