Thomas Gore charged with campaign finance violations
(AP, ABC7) - An assistant treasurer for District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray's 2010 campaign has been charged with making straw donations to another mayoral candidate and destroying evidence related to those contributions.
The criminal information filed Monday against Thomas Gore represents the first charges in a more than yearlong federal probe of Gray's campaign. The investigation and corruption cases involving other elected officials have clouded the Democratic mayor and district government since Gray took office.
A criminal information is a document that indicates a defendant is likely to plead guilty.
Gore's attorney, Frederick Cooke, could not immediately be reached for comment.
Records indicate the straw donations Gore is accused of making went to Sulaimon Brown, who accused Gray of promising him a job in exchange for negative comments about then-mayor Adrian Fenty.
Many found the news not very surprising.
"I hate to say this. I been here all my life, but the District government's been corrupt since I was here over 50 years,” says D.C. resident Derica Butler. “I've not seen one that was honest"
This feeds into scandal frenzy which has hit the city of late. Former council member Harry Thomas was sentenced to 38 months in prison recently for theft of public funds.
