Virginia Beach Navy jet crash: Damaged apartments reopening soon

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - Some residents of an apartment complex that was struck by a Navy jet in April will soon be able to return home.

The Navy says it has finished its remediation work at the Mayfair Mews Apartments in Virginia Beach. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality issued a letter to the Navy on Thursday saying that no further corrective action is needed.

The Navy demolished 27 units, removed contaminated soil and cleaned the 37 units that were undamaged. All utility services were restored to the undamaged apartments on Tuesday.

The apartment complex was struck by an F/A-18D Hornet on April 6 shortly after it took off from nearby Naval Station Oceana.

Navy officials are investigating the cause of the crash.
