Washington Gas has agreed to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Commonwealth of Virginia as part of a settlement related to the explosion of a house in Chantilly in December of 2010.

The State Corporation Commission announced the approval of the settlement Wednesday, more than a year and a half after a gas explosion that destroyed a home on Lees Corner Road in Chantilly on Dec. 19, 2010.

The utility came under fire in the wake of the explosion after ABC 7 News obtained an internal memo saying that the company would not undertake any inspections of gas lines because doing so could turn up further leaks.

According to the terms of the settlement, Washington Gas will pay the Commonwealth of Virginia at least $154,800, with another $219,700 due if other actions outlined in the settlement are not performed.

No one was injured in the explosion. The home belonged to the Nguyens, a family of four who was out to dinner at the time.

"Everything we built up for my whole life and it's gone," says Thuan Nguyen. "It's really tough to look at."

The other actions required by Washington Gas as part of the settlement include the replacement of each copper service line in the neighborhood where the explosion occurred.
