Daybreak Daily’s afternoon studious examination of the pop-culture charts finds a song with the deepest of meaning, a real star, other things, and the mystery music video.
MAYBE YOU CAN CALL: Bieber and Gomez played a big role in this, per Billboard, “Carly Rae Jepsen sends her pop culture juggernaut "Call Me Maybe" to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, dethroning Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know," featuring Kimbra, after eight weeks at the chart's summit. . . Jepsen is the first lead female to top the chart in a debut visit since Ke$ha sent "TiK ToK" to the top for nine weeks beginning the week of Jan. 2, 2010.” http://bit.ly/OGLGpB
MEANWHILE: Sorry but this is just creepy, per toofab, “Here's a "Call My Maybe" cover star we didn't expect: Colin Powell! The song that just won't die got two brand new versions this morning -- one from the former Secretary of State.” http://bit.ly/L7t960
MEANWHILE II: On the bigger list, a true superstar rises again, per MTV, “Adele is making this look way too easy. In a week when there were no less than six new faces in the Billboard 200 top 10, the 21 singer still managed to climb back into the #1 slot after weeks of hanging around in the #2 and #3 positions.” http://on.mtv.com/Kwb7we
WOW, THEY’RE COOL: Nothing like street cred, cough, per TMZ, “Chris Brown sustained a nasty gash on his chin -- apparently a wound from a bottle attack -- after his entourage allegedly clashed with Drake's crew in a NYC nightclub brawl. TMZ has confirmed with the NYPD that the two singers' crews got into a fight at WIP nightclub -- 5 people were injured in the melee.” http://bit.ly/L7lZio
FRESH PRINCE: Will Smith explains a lost gig, per The Playlist, “in the latest issue of Empire, in the feature on Quentin Tarantino's Southern/slave revenge film, "Django Unchained," the U.K. magazine got Smith to talk about his decision to ultimately not take the leading role, leaving it open for Jamie Foxx instead. "I came really close, it was one of the most amazing screenplays I had ever ever seen. I was in the middle of 'Men In Black 3' and [Tarantino] was ready to go, and I just couldn't sit with him and get through the issues, so I didn't want to hold him up. That thing's going to be ridiculous. It is a genius screenplay." http://bit.ly/KJ3j3G
ROCK OF AGES: This is a good read about the new movie, per the Los Angeles Times, “'Hairspray' director Adam Shankman misspent many happy hours of his youth on the Sunset Strip, the setting for his hair-rock gamble of a movie.” http://lat.ms/M7m2s8
BEING BIEBER: Life sounds so difficult for Justin B, per the New York Times, “(The) defining teen star of recent years turned 18 in March and has been in the public eye for almost four years, long enough to begin chafing. His desire to move in the world as an adult is palpable, but the very scale of his celebrity exacts its own sort of toll. Mr. Bieber can be his own man, sure, so long as he continues to belong to everyone else too.” http://nyti.ms/KEeBIz
UM, SORRY: No offense intended, per Rolling Stone, “HBO has apologized for the use of a prosthetic George W. Bush head as a prop in beheading scenes in “Game of Thrones”. The severed Bush head, which can be seen with a long ratty wig impaled on a spike in an episode from the show's first season, was used without any intentional commentary on the former president, said the show's creators.” http://bit.ly/Kwj8RU
DREAMING: Of then vs. now, per BuzzFeed, “Sex and the City premiered on HBO exactly 14 years ago. But what would the fab four be doing with themselves if the show were still on? Well, Charlotte would be all over Pinterest, obviously.” http://bit.ly/LMWMdT
THE NEWS HOUR?: Really?, per the AP, “A 20-year-old Briton suspected of links to the hacking group Lulz Security is accused of cracking into websites for a Fox reality TV show, a venerable PBS news show and other sites to deface them or steal personal information, federal prosecutors said Wednesday.” http://apne.ws/KXRFsh
SHOCKER: Stunning revelation, per Us Weekly, “Emily Maynard may seem like a low maintenance single mom on ABC’s “The Bachelorette” but before getting her big break on 2010's “The Bachelor,’’ the sweet southern gal went under the knife to prepare for her close-up, multiple sources tell Us Weekly.” http://bit.ly/MtOPZD
AND FINALLY: Today’s mystery music video. http://bit.ly/M0HiBK
