Bowie teenager killed by train she didn't hear coming
June 1, 2012 - 09:46 am
BOWIE, Md. (AP) - Prince George's County police say a Bowie teenager wearing headphones has been struck and killed by a train in the Riverdale area.
Cpl. Clinton Copeland says 17-year-old Mary K. Gaffney apparently did not notice an oncoming CSX freight train while walking on the tracks in the 6100 block of Lafayette Avenue late Wednesday.
Copeland says the train hit the teen and she was pronounced dead at a hospital early Thursday.
Copeland says it remains unclear why she was on the tracks. He says investigators believe the crash was accidental.
