Culpeper Town Police officials say that Daniel Harmon-Wright, who pleaded not guilty to the murder of 54-year-old Patricia Cook earlier this month, was relieved of his duties after an internal investigation.

Harmon-Wright, a veteran of the Iraq war, is facing charges of murder, malicious shooting and firearms charges in connection to the Feb. 9 shooting of Cook while she was in her vehicle on North East Street.

He was eventually indicted on charges in connection with the shooting in late May and pleaded not guilty about a week later.

According to reports, Harmon-Wright responded to reports of a suspicious woman in a vehicle in a church parking lot, later identified as Cook. The officer then claimed that without warning, she started driving away with his arm caught in the window.

Harmon-Wright said that after repeated commands to stop, he shot her.

Cook's husband, Gary, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Harmon-Wright in mid-May.
