Emeka Okafor traded to Wizards for Rashard Lewis, report says
The Washington Wizards have acquired center Emeka Okafor and forward Trevor Ariza from the New Orleans Hornets, the team announced Wednesday.
The deal saw the the Wizards trade forward Rashard Lewis and their 2012 2nd-round draft pick to the Hornets for Okafor and Ariza.
"Emeka's defensive presence and rebounding ability will combine with Trevor’s versatility to add new dimensions to our frontcourt," Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld said in a statement. "Both players fit in very well with the type of team-first culture that we have been working to establish."
Okafor, 29, played in just 27 games last season with the New Orleans Hornets while battling a knee injury. The 2004-05 NBA Rookie of the Year started his career with the Charlotte Hornets after being that year's #2 overall draft pick.
In 511 career games, Okafor is averaging 12.9 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. He also earned the Most Outstanding Player honor in the 2004 NCAA Tournament while leading the Connecticut Huskies to a national championship.
Washington will be Ariza's sixth stop in the NBA after stints in New York, Orlando, Los Angeles, Houston and New Orleans. He was a member of the 2008-09 Lakers team that defeated Orlando in the NBA Finals.
Lewis' brief stint in D.C. only lasted for 60 games. He averaged 7.8 points and 3.9 rebounds per game in 28 games with the Wizards last season. He was originally acquired in 2010 in the trade that sent Gilbert Arenas to Orlando.
