For the second time this year, a wrong-way driver in Anne Arundel County was involved in violent, fatal accident.

The latest deadly crash happened at about 2 a.m. Thursday in the northbound lanes of I-97 just before the exit for Benfield Road in Millersville. Police believe that, much like a similar crash in January, the driver of one of the vehicles was driving the wrong way of the busy highway.

Thursday's crash killed 25-year-old Kelley Whitt of Pasadena and 64-year-old Jianguo Pan of Glen Burnie, and police say that Whitt was at fault because she was driving southbound in the northbound lanes. There was no sign of alcohol at the crash scene, police say.

This accident bears striking resemblance to another one that happened this past January, in which a carload of intoxicated teenagers crashed head-on with a car being driven by a 55-year-old man. He and three of the teens died.

Police said in that crash, the teenagers were going the wrong way on I-97 and got all the way down to U.S. 50 near Davidsonville, where the crash happened, killing 55-year-old Terry Davis.

In that case, police determined that the young people entered the freeway the wrong way by turning onto a ramp exit just one mile away from Thursday's crash scene. State highway officials say that there's nothing wrong with the signage or engineering of I-97 in the area.
