Michael Kelly, D.C.'s appointment housing director, involved in sex scandal, report says
The man who Mayor Vincent Gray appointed to the head of the D.C. Department of Housing and Community Development apparently resigned in the midst of a sex scandal in Philadelphia, according to reports.
As ABC 6 in Philadelphia reports, Michael Kelly, who led the District's Housing Authority for nearly a decade, left his job as that city's housing authority abruptly last Friday.
Gray said he didn't think Kelly tries to deceive the District.
"There was no effort to hide anything," Gray says. "We had heard about this," he said.
Kelly officially cited family reasons for his quick exit, but sources tell ABC 6 that Kelly was involved in a sexual relationship with a woman who received a senior position and large pay raises despite not having the appropriate credentials.
What more, ABC 6 reports that the woman, who was in the United States on a work visa, resigned her post three weeks ago and went back to her home country.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Kelly told them only that he was "returning" to Washington when asked about his sudden departure.
The Washington Post reported Monday that Kelly must still be approved by the D.C. Council before officially taking on his role.
This latest flap comes on the heels of several controversies that have rocked D.C.'s leadership over the past few weeks. Since January, two D.C. Council members, Harry Thomas and Kwame Brown, have resigned. Two of Mayor Gray's campaign aides have also pleaded guilty to campaign violations.
