Va. I-495 construction to hamper weekend commute
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) - Drivers are once again being warned this weekend to avoid the Capital Beltway's outer loop this weekend near the Woodrow Wilson Bridge leading from Virginia into Maryland because of construction work.
Officials say the thru lanes on the outer loop, also designated I-95 North, will be closed approaching Alexandria from Friday at 9 p.m. to Monday at 5 a.m., unless weather requires postponement.
As a result, only one local lane on the beltway will carry traffic for a stretch between Van Dorn Street and Telegraph Road.
To help ease the congestion, all northbound traffic on I-95 will be directed at the Springfield Mixing Bowl onto either I-395 or the other loop of the beltway.
Similar road work earlier this month on the inner loop resulted in backups of several miles.
