In an email to Sullivan that Cooper allowed the reporter to publish on The Daily Beast,  Cooper said that he "couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud."

Cooper joined CNN in 2001 and began anchoring the show Anderson Cooper 360 in 2003; a show that has run continuously to this day. He's also the host of Anderson, a weekday talk show that airs on ABC 7.

In the email to Sullivan, Cooper said that he has always tried to project objectivity and sensitivity to to the people he covers, regardless of orientation or background.

"I still consider myself a reserved person and I hope this doesn’t mean an end to a small amount of personal space," Cooper told Sullivan. "But I do think visibility is important, more important than preserving my reporter’s shield of privacy."
