Teare’s retirement will be effective by August 1 and will bring an end to the criminal investigation that was being run against the police chief.

"It is important to resolve this matter without any further disruption to the effective functioning of the Police Department at a time when it is reorganizing and the Anne Arundel County Executive is under indictment," State Prosecutor Emmet Davitt said.

Anne Arundel County Executive John Leopold was indicted in March on charges of misusing his police protection squad, including making them wait while he had sex with a county employee in parking lots and using his officers to conceal it.

Leopold has said he will fight the charges.

"Our office believes that this resolution is in the best interests of the citizens of Anne Arundel County," Davitt said.
