Colorado theater shooting prompts actions on a variety of fronts

Daybreak Daily takes a look at the reporting and reactions from a wide variety of outlets regarding the Colorado shootings.
SECURITY CONCERNS: Covering all bases, per the Los Angeles Times, “The shooting rampage at a screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Colorado early Friday left theater owners and police scrambling to figure out how to beef up security for patrons as the movie opened in more than 4,000 theaters nationwide. The shooter in Colorado reportedly wore a riot helmet and a bulletproof vest and was dressed in black, raising questions about whether theaters should ban or limit costumes at the screenings. Many fans of Christopher Nolan's Batman films attend screenings in costume.” http://lat.ms/LCN6my
CHILLING: A descripton from afar, per the New York Times, “New York City Police Commissiner Raymond W. Kelly said the suspect in the shootings had red-painted hair that resembled the character “The Joker” from the Batman comics and movies. Mr. Kelly was speaking outside New York’s Police Headquarters in Lower Manhattan but did not offer how he knew about the suspect’s appearance.” http://nyti.ms/PqYemL
WARNER BROS.: Official statement, per the Washington Post, “After a shooting in a Colorado theater killed at least a dozen people and injured more than 50 during a midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises,” Warner Brothers, the studio that produced the film, issued a statement on Friday: “Warner Bros. is deeply saddened to learn about this shocking incident. We extend our sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims at this tragic time.” http://wapo.st/Nn8ttc
AMONG THE VICTIMS: A young journalist, per the Denver Post, “An aspiring sportscaster who last month escaped a deadly shooting at a Toronto shopping mall was among the victims in Friday's Aurora theater shooting. Jessica Ghawi, who was known professionally as Jessica Redfield, was killed in the shooting, according to online reports by her friends. On the Mile High Hockey blog, Cheryl Bradley said Ghawi had recently received press credentials for the Colorado Avalanche.” http://bit.ly/Q9SdgQ
INEVITABLE: Rhetoric about gun control, per the Huffington Post, “The circumstances surrounding the event are still being investigated, but as a picture develops, some have begun framing the tragedy in terms of the debate over gun control. CNN's Piers Morgan was one of the first public figures to link the incident to that issue, tweeting: Horrendous details from this Colorado cinema shooting. America has got to do something about its gun laws. Now is the time.” http://huff.to/OeGto3
ON HOLD: Box-office numbers, per the Wall Street Journal, ““The Dark Knight Rises” had been expected to challenge box office records, and it still may, but right now the focus of the filmmakers and studio behind the movie has turned to tragedy. After last night’s shooting outside a screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” in a Denver suburb, movie studio Warner Bros. has yet to release box-office numbers for midnight receipts. The studio had been planning to release the numbers at around 8 a.m. Pacific Time Friday.” http://on.wsj.com/LxSJhg
FROM POTUS: “. . . I’m sure that many of you who are parents here had the same reaction that I did when I heard this news. My daughters go to the movies. What if Malia and Sasha had been at the theater, as so many of our kids do every day? Michelle and I will be fortunate enough to hug our girls a little tighter tonight, and I’m sure you will do the same with your children. But for those parents who may not be so lucky, we have to embrace them and let them know we will be there for them as a nation.” http://bit.ly/MMN47Z
FROM MITT ROMNEY: “. . . Ann and I are deeply saddened by the news of the senseless violence that took the lives of 15 people in Colorado and injured dozens more. We are praying for the families and loved ones of the victims during this time of deep shock and immense grief. We expect that the person responsible for this terrible crime will be quickly brought to justice.” http://bit.ly/MMN47Z
YANKED: A violent trailer, per the Los Angeles Times, “Among the many challenges facing Warner Bros. in the aftermath of Friday's deadly shooting at a Colorado screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" is what to do about a key scene -- involving a bloodbath at a movie theater -- in its next big film, "Gangster Squad." . . . A source close to Warner Bros.who was not authorized to speak publicly said the studio has pulled its trailers for "Gangster Squad" from all theaters.” http://lat.ms/MMOcII
