SECURITY CONCERNS: Covering all bases, per the Los Angeles Times, “The shooting rampage at a screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Colorado early Friday left theater owners and police scrambling to figure out how to beef up security for patrons as the movie opened in more than 4,000 theaters nationwide. The shooter in Colorado reportedly wore a riot helmet and a bulletproof vest and was dressed in black, raising questions about whether theaters should ban or limit costumes at the screenings. CHILLING: A descripton from afar, per the New York Times, “New York City Police Commissiner Raymond W. Kelly said the suspect in the shootings had red-painted hair that resembled the character “The Joker” from the Batman comics and movies. Mr. Kelly was speaking outside New York’s Police Headquarters in Lower Manhattan but did not offer how he knew about the suspect’s appearance.” http://nyti.ms/PqYemL

WARNER BROS.: Official statement, per the Washington Post, “After a shooting in a Colorado theater killed at least a dozen people and injured more than 50 during a midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises,” Warner Brothers, the studio that produced the film, issued a statement on Friday: “Warner Bros. is deeply saddened to learn about this shocking incident. AMONG THE VICTIMS: A young journalist, per the Denver Post, “An aspiring sportscaster who last month escaped a deadly shooting at a Toronto shopping mall was among the victims in Friday's Aurora theater shooting. Jessica Ghawi, who was known professionally as Jessica Redfield, was killed in the shooting, according to online reports by her friends. On the Mile High Hockey blog, Cheryl Bradley said Ghawi had recently received press credentials for the Colorado Avalanche.” http://bit.ly/Q9SdgQ

INEVITABLE: Rhetoric about gun control, per the Huffington Post, “The circumstances surrounding the event are still being investigated, but as a picture develops, some have begun framing the tragedy in terms of the debate over gun control. CNN's Piers Morgan was one of the first public figures to link the incident to that issue, tweeting: Horrendous details from this Colorado cinema shooting. ON HOLD: Box-office numbers, per the Wall Street Journal, ““The Dark Knight Rises” had been expected to challenge box office records, and it still may, but right now the focus of the filmmakers and studio behind the movie has turned to tragedy. After last night’s shooting outside a screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” in a Denver suburb, movie studio Warner Bros. has yet to release box-office numbers for midnight receipts.
