The crash happened on southbound Connecticut Avenue near Bradley Lane in Chevy Chase.
Investigators say the 2005 Subaru Outback station wagon was traveling southbound when it struck a tree for unknown reasons.
Ann R. Smith, 88, a passenger in the vehicle, died at the scene. The driver, identified as 65year-old Robert Jay Groner, was taken to Suburban Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition.
