D.C. paying unemployment benefits to ineligible residents, report says

It appears the District may be paying unemployment benefits to ineligible residents, according to a new report by the city’s inspector general.

The report, obtained by the Washington Examiner, shows there are some deficiencies in D.C. Department of Employment Services’s application process.

Investigators said the agency was sufficiently verifying some information, but the department had significant problems in its process to review why applicants are unemployed, the Examiner reports.

It’s not clear how much was paid to ineligible residents.

Earlier this year, D.C. admitted that hundreds of city employees accepted unemployment benefits while on the city’s payroll.
