Kyrell Kyyon McNeill killed in Woodbridge shooting
A 4-year-old Woodbridge boy who found a loaded handgun in a family pickup truck accidentally shot and killed himself Wednesday afternoon, authorities say.
The shooting happened just before 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 14800 block of Empire Street in Woodbrdige. Prince William County Police officials tell ABC 7 that it appears that the boy wandered into an unlocked relative's pickup truck parked in front of a home, found a loaded handgun, fired it and accidentally shot himself.
The boy was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities identified the deceased as Kyrell Kyyon McNeill.
"I was getting ready to pull my garbage can back in to the house and I heard pop," neighbor Timothy Frye, who heard the shooting, said.
Police said the shooting appears self-inflicted and accidental. They have not released whose care the boy was under.
His family remembers an active boy who loved riding his scooter.
“He loved to play. He loves his papa - loves him,” says Timothy McClain, the victim’s great grandfather.
His great grandfather says boy's mother was home yesterday when the gun went off. An investigation is underway to determine whether any adults will face charges.
And other relatives are mourning the loss of a special boy.
“He was such a joy,” says Norma Jean Preston, the victim’s Aunt. “He loved basketball and playing, going to grandma's and playing basketball.”
