Daybreak Daily’s stroll through the pop-culture world finds applause for a revealing album, Tom & Jerry, other things, and the mystery music video.
NEW GROUND: With no backlash, per the Los Angeles Times, “With his decision to address lust for another man on his new album, "Channel Orange," 24-year-old Frank Ocean has become something other than one of the most dynamic R&B singers and songwriters of the last half-decade: He's become, for the moment, one of the first to challenge a genre known for its acidic intolerance of homosexuality.” http://lat.ms/Ox4FRk
HIT OR A MISS?: Either way, it’s intriguing, per the New York Times, “In the opening seconds of the British series “Hit & Miss,” a hooded assassin is revealed as a beautiful woman, which is a pretty familiar story by now. But this show wants to up the ante. After applying some lipstick and changing the license plate on her car, the hit woman takes off her clothes, revealing two more things: the impressively trim body of Chloë Sevigny, and a plainly displayed penis.
So “Hit & Miss,” which begins Wednesday on DirecTV’s Audience Network, is about a hit woman who’s a preoperative transsexual. But the show’s creator, Paul Abbott, doesn’t stop there.” http://nyti.ms/NKqQ7I
OF COURSE IT DIDN’T: Wink, wink, per Radar, “Tom Cruise's long-time attorney, Bert Fields, tells RadarOnline.com exclusively that the Church of Scientology played no role in the Mission Impossible star's divorce settlement with Katie Holmes.” http://bit.ly/MhhVcx
MEANWHILE: Well, maybe it did, per People, “The actress, 33, was increasingly unhappy in her five-year marriage to Tom Cruise as she realized "she no longer had the life she wanted, in terms of her career, her way of life, everything," a source tells PEOPLE in this week's cover story. So she took action – quickly.” http://bit.ly/PLVDVC
GONE DARK: Poof, per Entertainment Weekly, “At midnight on Tuesday, 17 Viacom-owned cable nets like Nickelodeon and Comedy Central went dark on DirecTV after the conglomerate failed to reach a new carriage deal with the satellite provider.” http://bit.ly/MZepZe
MICHAEL JACKSON: And Mars Blackmon, per Rolling Stone, “Filmmaker Spike Lee is currently in the final stages of post-production of a Michael Jackson documentary that focuses on the King of Pop's album Bad and ensuing world tour. The film, which syncs up nicely with the album's 25th anniversary, features 40 interviews done by Lee with Jackson's confidants, choreographers, musicians and other collaborators.” http://bit.ly/NnFhfN
SNAKE RIVER CANYON: Remember that deal? Anyway, per The Hollywood Reporter, “Channing Tatum is set to pull off his biggest stunt yet. The red-hot Magic Mike actor is in negotiations to star in and produce a film about daredevil Evel Knievel for Columbia Pictures. Tatum will produce with his Iron Horse Entertainment partner Reid Carolin, who will also write the screenplay.” http://bit.ly/MkkUlO
THE HUNGER: Varying pangs, per the Huffington Post, “What has been rumored for more than a year is now official: Lionsgate will split "Mockingjay," the final book in Suzanne Collins' best-selling "Hunger Games" trilogy, into two films, the studio announced on Tuesday. "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1" will arrive in theaters on Nov. 21, 2014; "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2" hits screens on Nov. 20, 2015.” http://huff.to/NlwjTl
ALRIGHTY THEN: Just the, um. . .facts, per Us Weekly, “Bachelorette host Chris Harrison is famous for keeping in touch with previous Bachelors and Bachelorettes, but this season's leading lady, Emily Maynard, isn't eager to be put on his speed dial. "Chris has the personal info for all the people on the show, but he doesn't have Emily's," says a show source of Harrison, who regularly keeps in touch with Trista and Ryan Sutter, who completed on ABC's inaugural season of The Bachelorette in 2003.” http://bit.ly/L8ccVA
CANCER: Just the facts, per the AP, “A year after movie producer Laura Ziskin lost her life to cancer, the ambitious telethon she helped start to fight the disease will be back on the air. Stand Up to Cancer, which said it's garnered more than $180 million in pledges for research, will air a live, commercial-free hour on the four major networks and on cable channels in September.” http://apne.ws/NgRWWb
YUCK: But hey, zombies rock, per PerezHilton, “We wish we could make this stuff up! Harcos Labs makes a novelty drink called zombie blood — it's green, slimy, gross, filled with protein, and explodes! That last attribute was completely unintended. Apparently the gross-out product was manufactured incorrectly and now when it spoils, the bag it comes in explodes.” http://bit.ly/PQe3pv
AND FINALLY: Today’s mystery music video. http://bit.ly/Ngmh4o
