Gerald Smith pleads guilty to Montgomery County cold case rapes
ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) - A man in prison in California for several rapes has pleaded guilty to three unsolved rapes in Maryland, extending an already long sentence.
Prosecutors in Montgomery County say 54-year-old Gerald Smith pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of first degree rape and was sentenced to 50 years in prison. He is already serving an 87 year to life sentence in California. Smith's sentence in Maryland would begin after the California sentence ends.
Prosecutors say that Smith was responsible for rapes in Maryland in 1981, 1982 and 1986. Those happened in Silver Spring, Wheaton and Rockville. Prosecutors say Smith was linked to the unsolved rapes in 2010 with the aid of DNA evidence.
Smith's attorney did not immediately return a telephone call Thursday afternoon seeking comment.
