Harris Teeter locations give out free ice
With thousands still without power in the D.C. area, food safety is a very real issue.
The Center for Disease Control says if your power is out for less than two hours, all the food in you refrigerator will be safe for you and your family to eat.
While the power is out, the refrigerator and freezer doors should be kept closed as much as possible. Food will be safe in a half full freezer for up to 24 hours, 48 hours in a full freezer.
Should your power be out for longer than two hours, the CDC says remember the ABCDs of food safety:
Always keep meat, poultry, fish and eggs refrigerated at or below 40 °F and frozen food at or below 0 °F. Get dry or block ice to help keep your food at these temperatures.
Be prepared by keeping foods that don't require refrigeration on hand i.e. canned goods and other non-perishable items.
Consider how you can prepare ahead of a storm to keep your food safe, like buying coolers and other storage solutions. If your freezer isn't full, the CDC advises placing the items close together.
Digital, dial, or instant-read food thermometers will help you determine if your food is safe.
Refrigerated items should be placed in a cooler surrounded by ice to keep them safe. However, you should check their temperature before you consume them.
To help residents stay cool and keep their food safe, several Harris Teeter locations will give out free bags of ice. The participating locations will begin distribution at 8 a.m. and are as follows:
