WASHINGTON (AP) - An advocacy group has filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education alleging that black and Latino students and students with disabilities are being shut out of a prestigious Fairfax County high school.

The Coalition of The Silence filed its complaint Monday. It alleges that the students are being kept from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology because Fairfax County systematically fails to identify them for gifted-education programs.

The Washington Post reports a Fairfax County schools spokesman said officials could not comment because they had not had a chance to review the complaint.

Black and Latino students make up about 4 percent of next year's freshman class at Thomas Jefferson. The two groups make up 32 percent of the county's student population.
