Daybreak Daily’s glimpse at the pop-culture world finds supporters of weed, a death investigation, other things, and the mystery music video.
CHEECH: And Chong -- Morgan Freeman is the latest celebrity to support legalization of marijuana, per Newsweek, “It’s just the stupidest law possible, given history. You don’t stop people from doing what they want to do, so forget about making it unlawful. You’re just making criminals out of people who aren’t engaged in criminal activity. And we’re spending zillions of dollars trying to fight a war we can’t win! We could make zillions, just legalize it and tax it like we do liquor. It’s stupid.” http://bit.ly/MtM89Q
MEANWHILE: Another voice, per the Huffington Post, “In case you didn't know, Roseanne Barr's number one issue in her presidential campaign is the legalization of marijuana. And she made that point abundantly clear on Tuesday's Late Show with David Letterman. Parodying Charlton Heston's famous NRA battle cry, Barr said directly to the President, "Obama, you'll get my joint when you pry it out of my cold, dead fingers." http://huff.to/MJUZ5P
BRYANT GUMBEL: He has a beef, per the Los Angeles Times, “Ann Curry has had many defenders in her recent battle with NBC and “Today,” whose co-host chair she was, of course, forced to vacate. But the TV personality doesn’t win any sympathy from one prominent former"Today"figure. Bryant Gumbel, the broadcaster who presided over the morning program for 15 years, said he feels Curry has received overly favorable treatment. Curry’s ouster, Gumbel believes, was a simple matter of ratings, and he wonders why so many observers and commentators have rallied so vocally to her defense.” http://lat.ms/Pla0ze
NEWT: And Snooki, per New York Magazine, “It was one of the more unusual pairings on late night television. Gingrich took a keen interest in Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, marveling at her like some kind of mystical creature from his imagination come to life, an experience he often enjoys during his many trips to the zoo.” http://bit.ly/LYwirz
SAD STORY: But not sure how this advances it, per TMZ, “Authorities investigating the death of Sage Stallone believe a "likely scenario" is he was dealing drugs -- specifically Hydrocodone -- generic Vicodin -- law enforcement sources tell TMZ. We're told authorities do NOT believe Sage was an addict, in no small part because of his weight. Our sources say ... at the time of his death, the 5'7" actor (his IMDB profile incorrectly lists his height at 5'10") weighed 188 pounds. One law enforcement source tells TMZ, "He was pudgy, and drug addicts are almost always rail thin." http://bit.ly/QaHMIP
NAS: He’s back, per the New York Times, “ ‘Loco-Motive’ appears early on his 10th solo album, “Life Is Good” (Def Jam), released this week and his first album in four years. It’s stark and hard, a boom-bap production that wouldn’t have sounded out of place on “Illmatic.” The song features ad-libbed taunts by Large Professor, of the revered 1990s group Main Source. Nas unfolds the third verse slowly, forgoing direct rhyme for vivid picture: “At night, New York, eat a slice, too hot/Use my tongue to tear the skin hanging from the roof of my mouth.” http://nyti.ms/LulT0I
NASCAR: Some of you will get this, per Radar, “Emily Maynard is eyeing a move from North Carolina to Hollywood to pursue her dream of a TV career, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting. As we previously reported, Maynard will be getting engaged in the season finale of The Bachelorette this Sunday and the blonde cutie is hoping to do a spin-off show that would feature the bride-to-be planning for the big day!” http://bit.ly/MaqmXL
LIGHTS OUT: Of a dark knight rising, per The Hollywood Reporter, “Christopher Nolan's brooding and acclaimed Batman trilogy is going out in style. Pre-release tracking for The Dark Knight Rises is so big that the movie should have no trouble besting the $158.4 million opening of The Dark Knight to score the best domestic debut of all time for a 2D pic. The next big question: Just how high will the number end up?” http://bit.ly/P5MwdU
TOMKAT: The latest, per Celebuzz, “The woman who gave Katie Holmes her start in acting has spoken out against Tom Cruise, declaring him “domineering” and “ridiculous” — and revealing that Holmes left Cruise “for the sake of Suri.” Margaret O’Brien, who ran a charm and etiquette school in Toledo, Ohio that Holmes once attended, didn’t mince her words when talking about the 50-year-old Mission: Impossible star.” http://bit.ly/MmQstb
WE’RE ALL WASTED: And pinball wizards, per Rolling Stone, “The Who have announced they will embark on a 36-date Quadrophenia tour this fall, performing their 1973 rock opera in its entirety. The band's first North American tour in four years will kick off on November 1st in Sunrise, Florida, and wrap on February 26th in Providence, Rhode Island.” http://bit.ly/Oc5kJ0
BROKEN CAGE: With a twang, per Billboard, “Country group Zac Brown Band nets its second No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 as "Uncaged" starts with a larger-than-expected 234,000 sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It earns the act its best sales week yet, trumping the 153,000 that "You Get What You Give" sold in its debut frame in 2010.” http://bit.ly/SJpUUa
HUH?: Birth of the cool, per People, “Heidi Klum has so far been successful in passing down strong sense of style to her children. "We have a rule in the house," the supermodel recently told reporters during a conference call. "Rule No. 1 is always to look cool, and rule No. 2 is don't forget about rule No. 1. We have other rules ... but the No. 1 rule is to always look cool." http://bit.ly/NIGd3P
