Mount Vernon shooting leaves one dead
Updated: July 9, 2012 - 05:47 pm
An investigation continues into what led to a police-involved shooting that left one suspect dead in the Mount Vernon area of Alexandria on Sunday night, police say.
Fairfax County Police say the two officers confronted two men who were acting suspiciously near the intersection of Frye Road and Madge Lane around 11:20 p.m. Sunday. While being approached, one of the men fled.
Once the officers caught up with them, an struggle ensued, during which police say one of the suspects drew a handgun and shot at the officers. The officers fired back and struck the suspect. During the struggle, the second suspect also fled and has not yet been found.
The suspect was transported to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The deceased has been identified as Nicholas Allen Kaelber, 21, of Woodbridge.
Neither of the officers was injured. The investigating is ongoing.
In a community thick with apartments and townhouses, many people saw the commotion and dove for cover even inside their own homes.
“We saw a guy lying down. Before the police came. We saw everything. A guy with the blue jeans,” says resident Janet Kwarbi.
As police continue to work the scene, Alexis Joshua walks past with her newborn son. She worries about the second suspect that got away.
“It's terrible,” she says. “I'm very scared now that there's someone still out there.”
