Police spokeswoman Julie Parker said Officer Rachael Jacob was working part-time at Galaxy Nite Club, located in the 2000 block of University Boulevard.

At about 12:30 a.m. Saturday morning, Jacob ejected a man and two women from the club for disorderly conduct. The three got into a white Honda and drove slowly past the entrance of the club.

The driver reached through the passenger side window and began firing a handgun towards the entry of the club, Parker said.

One round struck Jacob in the leg. Officers returned fire. The Honda was stopped by police a short distance away.

All three suspects were arrested and a handgun was recovered.

Kelly Gilliss, 32, of the 11000 block of Cherry Hill Road in Beltsville was charged with 13 counts, including three counts of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment and using a handgun in the commission of a crime.

Officer Jacob is a four-year veteran of the Prince George's County Police Department. She's recovering after having surgery this morning to remove the bullet from her leg.

Parker said this was the fifth time in 18 months a officer of the county has been shot or shot at, which she said is unprecedented.
