Prince George's County's Whole Foods plan moves forward
July 10, 2012 - 09:24 am
UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) - A plan to construct the first Whole Foods Market in Prince George's County is moving forward.
The county council voted 7-2 on Monday in favor of a rezoning request that would allow for the market to be built as part of a mixed-use development, including town houses, office space and retail, in Riverdale Park.
The proposal has been divisive. Supporters, including County Executive Rushern Baker III, envision new jobs and retail opportunities while opponents say the rezoning would violate the county's master plan and lead to nightmarish traffic along Route 1.
The vote is expected to face a court challenge.
