Road buckling a possibility in excessive heat, VDOT says

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Department of Transportation is urging motorists to be alert to the possibility of buckled pavement during the current heat wave.

The department says extreme heat can cause pavement to crack or buckle, and motorcyclists should be especially careful. According VDOT, buckling is prevalent in the mid-Atlantic states of Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and North Carolina.

Minor buckling was repaired earlier this week on Interstate 395 in northern Virginia.

VDOT crews are on special alert for emergency repairs this weekend as temperatures are expected to soar above 100 degrees.
