In the midst of the seemingly endless bureaucracy that surrounds the project that will send Metro into Loudoun County, a milestone was reached Tuesday in construction of the Silver Line.

Tuesday morning crews began putting the final segment of the Dulles Metrorail Aerial Guideway into place in Tysons Corner; a portion that continues to pave the way to send Metro to Washington Dulles International Airport.

The portion of span that was installed Tuesday is the one that will carry Silver Line trains over the Capital Beltway and into Tysons Corner. The entire span splits off from the Orange Line at the East Falls Church station and runs for three miles.

"We've got about 35 percent to go, and this will allow us to make the final connections," Larry Melton, the project's executive director, said.

Four stations are planned for the Tysons Corner area and five total in Phase I of the project. Trains are expected to start running out to Reston by December 2013.

For commuters like Matthew Hill, the major step means progress toward easing his ride from Upper Marlboro to Fairfax County.

"I look out the window and see it," Hill said. "I'm definitely glad it has come closer and closer to completion."
