Daybreak Daily’s visit to pop-culture divorce court finds an altered docket, a controversial religion, other things, and the mystery music video.

OF THE DAUGHTER SURI: And Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes and Scientology, per the Los Angeles Times, “Experts said that no matter what the terms of the separation agreement, Cruise will still have a legal right to teach Suri Scientology when she is in his care. Authorities in so-called "spiritual custody" disputes said that while family law judges try to ensure that the interests of children of divorce are protected in matters like medical care and housing, they give both parents broad leeway in choosing a religious upbringing.

“The general rule is the courts will defer unless the consequences are really detrimental to the health of the child — a threat of immediate and substantial harm," said Jeffrey Shulman, a professor of law at Georgetown University who has written extensively about the issue and believes that standard doesn't protect children sufficiently.” http://lat.ms/NhS8mN

MEANWHILE: Reason behind the quick settlement, per TMZ, “We're told what turned everything around was a series of conversations that Suri would be irreparably damaged by parental warfare. It registered big time with both Tom and Katie, and it allowed their lawyers to strike a deal in what could be record time for this type of divorce.” http://bit.ly/Ng8hJX

AIDS AND THE BLACK COMMUNITY: Of a documentary, per the New York Times, “ ‘Frontline’ tackles one of the country’s thornier and more invisible problems on Tuesday with “Endgame: AIDS in Black America,” which tries to pin down why rates of AIDS and H.I.V. infection are disproportionately high among black Americans. The program focuses largely on institutional causes that have been suggested by various studies, a play-it-safe approach that omits a core question: With so much known about the disease and so many years of safe-sex messages out there, how can anyone still be cavalier or uninformed about this subject?” http://nyti.ms/MffTPd

JANIS JOPLIN: The final months, per Deadline, “Here's a confluence of exciting people: Sundance Best Director honoree Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy May Marlene), Best Actress Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur), and Janis Joplin. Deadline reports a biopic titled Joplin will center on the last six months of the singer's life.” http://bit.ly/MfhXa9

WELL, NOW: Good for him, per Celebuzz, “The man behind critically acclaimed Hollywood films Mulholland Drive and The Elephant Man is about to become the father — again — at age 66. David Lynch, a four-time Academy Award nominated filmmaker and his wife of three years, Emily Stofle, are expecting a little girl, Celebuzz has learned.” http://bit.ly/PL8WqJ

NORA EPHRON: Remembered, per Vanity Fair, “Nora Ephron was memorialized with humor, eloquence, and a great deal of love Monday afternoon at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. Notables like Mike Nichols, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, and Rosie O’Donnell honored the dazzling wit and transformational life of this remarkable woman. Ephron died at 71 on June 26, after a battle with myeloid leukemia. She told only a few intimates that she was ill—Nora hated complaining.” http://vnty.fr/MXtji4

NO RICKY?: No Broadway buzz, per Variety, “Legiters wondering just how much it's worth to have Ricky Martin on a marquee got an answer last week, which saw strong-selling musical revival "Evita" plummet by almost $550,000 when Martin took a scheduled break.” http://bit.ly/Mia7IV

THE BEATLES: Ringo thumps his chest, per CNN, “While most of their conversations aren't about "the old days," as both are actively involved in their solo careers, Starr still feels the reverberations of the music they made as Beatles. "The music we made is still important," Starr said. "The kids are still learning about our music all these years later. We left a great legacy. Every generation listens to The Beatles. We’re still outselling most acts!" http://bit.ly/L5KOHN

OBAMAWOOD: Bullish on Barack, per the Wrap, “Hollywood has a new insider status symbol, and it’s a non-paying job for the most public guy in the country: being an Obama surrogate. This campaign that includes everyone from Eva Longoria to Alec Baldwin to Gwen Stefani to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They blog on Huffington Post. They drop key White House accomplishments in interviews otherwise scheduled for movie openings. They give concerts.” http://bit.ly/OV82oN
