Shortly after 1 a.m. this morning shots were fired outside a 7-11 store in the popular U Street corridor in Northwest Washington, marking the second shooting in a week that has plagued the popular weekend spot.

Two adult females were shot this morning outside on the sidewalk at the corner of 12th and U Street Northwest. The women were sent to a local hospital with non-life-threatening bullet wounds.

The suspect is still at large, but as of tonight the Metropolitan Police Department has no description of the shooter.

U Street resident Andre Carter was across the street on the balcony of his apartment when he heard the shots and saw the scuffle afterwards.

“I heard three pops and I looked to the right in this direction to see what was going on,” Carter recalled today, “I saw some people running and I thought ‘oh maybe someone got shot.’ And seconds later I heard cops and then they were on the street. All on this corner. They sectioned it off. I thought the worst.”

Carter says he and his girlfriend cancelled their plans to venture out after observing the shooting.

“We were actually going to go out last night but after the shots, not knowing what was going on we decided to stay in.”

This morning’s shooting is the second shooting in a week in the area. Last Saturday there was a shooting just one block away on the corner of 11th and U Street Northwest.

Police say no motive has been established in today’s shooting so they are not connecting the two incidents.

U Street residents are concerned about the uptick in violence in their area over such a short period of time.

“It’s just nonstop violence, you know. It just has to stop,” Clarence Faizon said on U Street today.

“It’s concerning because it’s happened a lot around here lately, “U St resident Brian Ortiz said today “I just think they need to start stepping up patrols or something.”

Local businessman Oji Abbott who works in a restaurant on U Street hopes for business much more will be done to make the area safer.

“It could happen anywhere, but unfortunately it’s happened here, a couple weekends in a row. So we don’t want that to be a natural thing that’s going on every week,” Abbott said today on U Street after hearing the commotion last night. “We’re trying to figure out why all this violence is happening. We hope that people would start to think a little bit before they start pulling out guns

Police say they are “actively investigating” this incident and ask that anyone with information call the Metropolitan Police Department.
