Woman killed in Gambrills house fire
A woman in her 70's was killed late Sunday night after a fire at her Gambrills home which had no smoke detectors inside, Anne Arundel County Fire officials say.
Officials say that Anne Arundel County firefighters were dispatched to a reported house fire in the 1300 block of Ferrara Drive in Gambrills just after 9:30 p.m. Sunday. The fire was discovered by a passer-by who tried to alert the residents; however, there was no response.
Firefighters then forced entry into the home, where they found a woman on the second floor who was unconscious and unresponsive. She was transported to Baltimore Washington Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.
The fire originated on the first floor and caused an estimated $80,000 in damage, officials say. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
More than 40 firefighters from Anne Arundel County, Fort George G. Meade, and the BWI Airport Fire Departments worked about 40 minutes to bring the fire under control.
Officials continue to withhold identification of the victim pending an autopsy. If the cause of death is determined to be fire-related, this will be the 4th fire death in Anne Arundel County for 2012.
