Today's field trip to pop-culture screening room finds cinematic propaganda, an eye-brow raising gate, an underground Prince Harry, other things, and the mystery music video.
OBAMA’S AMERICA: When a political attack ad disguises itself as art, per the Los Angeles Times, “Now anyone with a political agenda and low-cost digital camera can make a movie and call it a documentary. Even enterprises that at best are vanity projects and at worst badly disguised and overly long attack ads are taken seriously by audiences — and box-office observers.
“That is precisely the shape of things in "2016: Obama's America," which promises to demystify the president — "Love him, hate him, now you know him" is one of its tag lines — but does more to illuminate its filmmaker, Dinesh D'Souza, and his ego instead.” http://lat.ms/Rg7TcV
MEANWHILE: A better-than-expected showing at the box office, per The Hollywood Reporter, “Galvanizing conservatives, Dinesh D’Souza and John Sullivan’s documentary 2016: Obama's America grossed a stellar $6.3 million as it expanded nationwide over the weekend, beating a trio of new films. The anti-Barack Obama film, opening last month in only a few theaters, boasts a domestic cume of $9.2 million, the top gross of the year for a documentary (excluding nature films). Bully was the previous crownholder with $3.5 million.” http://bit.ly/QJWZeR
NO FACE TIME FOR PRINCE HARRY: And no time to be social, per Us Weekly, “Nearly a week after nude photos of the 27-year-old British royal partying in Las Vegas took the web by storm, he has frozen his Facebook account -- which he kept under an anonymous pseudonym -- a source confirms to Us Weekly.” http://bit.ly/QmXCAh
MEANWHILE: Sticking up from print, per Deadline, “(A)fter Rupert Murdoch‘s Sun newspaper published (the photos) Friday, the Press Complaints Commission logged over 850 gripes. Murdoch responded – and launched what looks like a challenge to the Leveson Inquiry on UK media ethics – by defending the tabloid’s decision via Twitter. On Sunday, he tweeted: “Simple equation: free, open uncontrollable Internet versus shackled newspapers equals no newspapers. Let’s get real.” http://bit.ly/NxpYC8
TAKING A BREAK: Morning show host will be on the air through this week, per TMZ, “Robin Roberts will begin her medical leave from "Good Morning America" on Friday ... so she can undergo bone marrow transplant surgery. Earlier this year, Roberts announced she was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) ... a disease that attacks the blood and bone marrow.” http://bit.ly/OoHJrA
STILL DANCING: A star (?) returns, per Entertainment Weekly, “Sabrina Bryan won the Dancing With the Stars‘ viewers’ choice vote to take the 13th slot on the upcoming all-stars season. The former Disney channel star will be partnering with Louis van Amstel, who tweeted, “I found out friday night, it was so hard not to tell anyone. I wanted to scream it out loud, but wasn’t allowed…” http://bit.ly/NRyIsG
MORK: Robin Williams to play Dwight D. Eisenhower, per People, “The role is for The Butler, an adaptation of a Washington Post article about the real-life Eugene Allen, a White House domestic-staff member who served under eight First Families. Forest Whitaker plays Allen and Oprah Winfrey will play his wife.” http://bit.ly/PM7Vuc
NO JUSTICE: But in a League of his own, per E!, “Rumors that Ben Affleck was planning to take the helm of the long-in-the-works Justice League movie for Warner Bros. have been greatly exaggerated. The actor-director set the record straight about reports of his involvement, telling Canadian news outlet 24 Hours that he is not, repeat not, in the running for the job after all.” http://eonli.ne/Tjk6ip
SNOOKI: Her buddies tweet their best wishes, per the Insider, “The cast of Jersey Shore took time out from GTL-ing to congratulate Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi on having her first child: "Lorenzo is the cutest baby I ever seen. Love him already," tweeted JWoww. "I'm Officially Uncle Pauly!!!" tweeted DJ Pauly D. "Can't wait to meet #babylorenzo!" tweeted Vinny. "Congrats to Nicole and jionni on their healthy baby boy! All the best!" The Situation tweeted. "Congratulations meatball ! @snooki and @JLaValle love you both! <3 I can't wait to see him!!!" tweeted Deena.” http://bit.ly/NRI0oE
MORMON INDIGNATION: So viewers will go without, per The Wrap, “Predictably offended Salt Lake City Television station KSV-TV won't air the new NBC comedy "The New Normal," which features a gay couple adopting a baby. The Mormon church-owned NBC affiliate station doesn't say what exactly it finds offensive about the show, but, yawn.” http://bit.ly/QnrSuR
VENICE FILM FESTIVAL: Of getting with the times, per Variety, “This fall the world’s oldest film festival, Venice, takes a pioneering step into cyber-space, one of several sprocket operas to move toward creating a mirror image of itself in the virtual universe. For the first time, Venice will be putting part of its official selection online. Fifteen features in its Horizons section will be streamed for the public day-and-date.” http://bit.ly/PMfMYt
SURPRISE!: Or not, per Rolling Stone, “Billie Joe Armstrong may have described it as "the worst kept secret ever," but Green Day’s opening slot on the second day of the U.K.’s Reading Festival still caught some festival-goers by surprise (Saturday) morning. While the band had dropped the heaviest of hints that they would appear in the days leading up to the festival, Armstrong only confirmed the set 45 minutes before the 11 a.m. start time via Twitter.” http://bit.ly/MW3C1x
PUSSY RIOTERS: Gee, this should go well, per the AP, “Three members of the Pussy Riot punk band have appealed a court's decision to jail them for two years for their "punk prayer" against Russian leader Vladimir Putin in a Moscow cathedral, their lawyer said Monday.” http://apne.ws/PJnYvg
