'Skin tax' in strip clubs to raise funds for rape centers
August 21, 2012 - 11:22 am
This one is up there in the ranks of budget creativity: Illinois has passed a “skin tax” for strip clubs in an effort to raise funds for rape crisis centers in the state.
Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed the law that then creates the Sexual Assault Services and Prevention Fund. The bill was passed unanimously in May. Texas has passed a similar bill.
The law, which will take effect on Jan. 1, 2013 was created in response to a decline in state funding for rape crisis centers. The new legislation will impose a surcharge for each patron.
