911 tapes from Pasadena boat accident released
Updated: August 29, 2012 - 05:51 pm
The frantic 911 calls that were made immediately in the aftermath of the Aug. 22 boat crash that involved a Maryland delegate have been released, and they paint a picture of a horrifying collision that injured nine people.
Maryland State Del. Don Dwyer, who was injured in the collision, admitted to drinking alcohol and operating the boat. He said that he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.2 at the time of the crash.
"I saw two people go flying," Allen Woytowitz, a witness to the crash, told a 911 operator. "It was like a fiberglass crunch. Not anything you want to hear again."
Woytowitz and his neighbor rushed to the scene of the accident, saying that the entire front of one boat was torn up and that the other had kids on it.
That boat, which was loaded with Randy Harbin and his grandchildren, collided on the Magothy River. Six people, including Dwyer, were hospitalized after the accident near Gibson island.
Dwyer said that he regretted his actions, saying no one should ever drink and operate a motor vehicle or powerboat.
Nurse Lisa Willis, whose voice could be heard in the background of the 911 calls and was on the rescue boat which responded to the crash, says it's amazing that nobody suffered anything worse than broken bones.
"The outcome here was completely incredible," she said. "There is no explanation for this miracle out here."
