Beach smoking ban pushed for by Delaware environmentalists
FENWICK ISLAND, Del. (AP) - Environmental leaders in Fenwick Island are pushing for a smoking ban on the town's beaches.
Marry Ellen Langan, chairwoman of the Fenwick Island Environmental Committee, says cigarettes are the No. 1 polluter on beaches worldwide. She says she thinks there will be a lot of support for a ban.
The Daily Times of Salisbury reported in Friday's edition that the committee hopes to get the issue on the agenda for the Town Council's September meeting.
Many beach towns in the region have smoking bans in place for parks and playgrounds, but few have them for beaches. Bethany Beach has banned smoking in the summer months, and smoking is also banned on beaches in Delaware's state parks. Ocean City, Md., officials have also discussed a possible smoking ban.
