Dulles Greenway tanker crash: Diesel truck crashes on highway
Updated: August 30, 2012 - 08:52 pm
The driver of a tanker truck that crashed on the Dulles Greenway in Ashburn early Thursday morning is expected to be OK, but charges connected to the accident could be pending, police say.
The crash happened just before 5:30 a.m. on the westbound Dulles Greenway at the Claiborne Parkway exit, Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said. The tanker was carrying diesel fuel.
Geller said that the driver, a 52-year-old Strasburg, Va. man, was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
Workers took nearly half the day to drain the truck's tank so they could transfer the remaining 7,000 gallons diesel to a new truck, which kept the westbound lanes closed. The work wrapped up and the lanes reopened just after 2 p.m.
An investigation into the cause of the crash continues.
