Updated: August 14, 2012 - 09:31 am
Fairfax County Police have identified a man killed when his car crashed head-on into a marked cruiser in the Franconia area of Alexandria on Monday.
The driver, 52-year-old Jeffrey M. Woods, of Alexandria, was pronounced dead at the scene, police say.
The accident happened just before 3 a.m. Monday near the intersection of Franconia Road and Gum Street, Fairfax County Police spokesman Don Gotthardt said. A car was traveling westbound on Franconia when it suddenly veered to the left and ran head-on into a county police cruiser, injuring a 30-year-old Fairfax County officer.
The car, driven by Woods, burst into flames.
The officer was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Gotthardt says. He is a seven-year veteran of the department.
Gotthardt says the cruiser’s lights and siren were not active at the time of the crash.
All lanes of Franconia Road were closed for several hours.
