George Huguely seeks new trial in U.Va. murder case
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - A former University of Virginia lacrosse player convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend is asking a judge to grant him a new trial.
Attorneys for George Huguely V are due in Charlottesville Circuit Court on Wednesday in a bid to have his second-degree murder charge set aside in the slaying of Yeardley Love.
The Chevy Chase, Md., man was convicted in February of killing the suburban Baltimore woman in a violent encounter May 2010 after a day of binge drinking by Huguely.
Attorneys for Huguely cite a series of errors before and during the trail in arguing for a new trial.
Prosecutors oppose the defense motion.
A judge is expected rule on the defense motion before Huguely's sentencing Aug. 30.
He faces up to 26 years in prison.
