Herndon Police detectives are continuing their investigation into a Wednesday hit-and-run that killed a 35-year-old woman whose husband was also found dead nearby.
The victim of the hit-and-run crash, 35-year-old Simret Tekle Woldetensae, was found lying in a parking lot in the 600 block of Center Street about 1 a.m. Wednesday near the Lifestyle Condominium complex. She was pronounced dead at the scene and may have lived close to the crime scene, Herndon police say. A short time later, officers discovered the body of her husband, 32-year-old Fitsum Abrha Gebretatios, near a creek that runs near the housing complex.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine how Gebretatios died. A Toyota Camry that belonged to him that was found crashed into several vehicles nearby is being processed as evidence in the hit-and-run.
Maqbool Ahmed, a nearby resident and witness to the crash, said that he heard a loud crash and came out to find what he described as a panicked driver.
"He was out of his car when I came out," Ahmed said. "(He) ran toward the side of the building."
Three children who were found inside the home of Gebretatios and Woldetensae have been placed with Child Protective Services.
Several hours after the crash, Herndon Police Lt. Jerry Keys said investigators recovered the body of a man "similar in description to the person of interest" in the incident. The body, later identified as Gebretatios, was found in a rocky, shallow creek approximately 75 yards from the site of the second crash.
Mike Carlson was walking his dog just steps from where the body was found.
"He's laying on big rocks, like two feet in diameter. He's upside down in the rocks in the middle of the stream," Carlson recalled.
Police say the man did not have any weapons on him.
