I-70 closed after tractor-trailer fire
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) - The Maryland State Highway Administration says both lanes of eastbound Interstate 70 west of Clear Spring remain closed after a fire in a tractor-trailer carrying blasting devices.
Spokesman David Buck said Friday the agency is assessing the extent of any asphalt damage from the fire.
He says authorities are diverting eastbound traffic onto U.S. 40 at exit 12 to avoid a 6-mile stretch of I-70.
Maryland State Police say there was no explosion. Firefighters let the flames burn out and then used water to cool the smoldering remains.
First Sgt. Kevin Lewis says the fire apparently started in the brakes of the eastbound truck.
He says the driver managed to separate the truck from the trailer and drive away from the blaze.
